Working Hours
Government offices, private businesses and shops do not keep the same hours. Below is a general guide to office, shopping and banking hours.
Public Service Hours
Public service operating hours are flexible all year round. Operating days are from Monday to Friday, starting between 07:30 - 08:30 and closing between 15:00 - 16:00.
Private Sector Hours
Each company keeps its own hours, but generally, office hours are 08:00 - 13:00 / 15:00 - 18:00 Monday to Friday for the period September 15th - May 31st, and 08:00 - 13:00 / 16:00 - 19:00 Monday to Friday, for the period June 1st - September 14th.
Shop Opening Hours
Shop opening hours vary depending on their type and location and whether they are located in urban, tourist or rural areas.
Generally, shops will open between 07:00 - 21:00 on Monday - Saturday, but this can vary an hour or two either way, depending on the type of shop and the area it is located in. On Sunday, opening times are later, typically around 11:00, and closing times vary from 14:00 - 22:00, again depending on the type of outlet and its area.
Some shops still observe a half-day closing on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, and close on Sunday, although in most of the tourist areas of Cyprus, both shops and supermarkets stay open till late at night, and are also open on Sundays.
During the period June 15th - August 31st there is an optional three-hour afternoon break/rest from 14:00 - 17:00 (siesta).
Special shopping hours apply for Christmas and Easter with shops permitted to stay open later during the run-up to the events, but must be closed by 18:00 on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, and by 18:00 on Good Friday.
Eating Hours
Breakfast is usually served between 07:00 and 10:00, lunch is served in restaurants between 12:00 and 15:00, and dinner is served from 19:00 till late in the evening.
Public Holidays
The days listed below are Public Holidays in Cyprus. All public services, private enterprises, banks and shops are closed on Public Holidays, although many shops and certain services remain open in resorts and coastal areas. Currency
On January 01, 2008, the Republic of Cyprus introduced the Euro (€) as its official currency, replacing the Cyprus pound (CY£) as the legal tender of Cyprus, at the irrevocable fixed exchange rate of €1 = CY£ 0,585274.

There are seven denominations in Euro banknotes: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500. They are all distinguished by a different colour and size, with the higher the denomination, the bigger the size.

One Euro is divided into 100 cent. There are eight Euro coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent, and 1 and 2 Euro. The designs on one side of the coins are common to all the countries of the Eurozone (those with the Euro as their currency), while the other side reflects the national identity of the issuing country. All Euro coins can be used in all Eurozone countries, irrespective of their national side.

Currency Exchange
All banks operating in Cyprus offer foreign currency exchange services and quote the exchange rates of the Euro against all major foreign currencies daily. Foreign currency can also be exchanged at hotels. More detailed information concerning exchange rates can be obtained from the Central Bank of Cyprus.

Import / Export - Banknotes, Currency and / or Gold
There are no restrictions on the import and export of cash or gold for travellers from and to another EU Member State.
However, according to the ‘Control of Cash Entering or Leaving the Community and the Exercise of Intercommunal Controls on Cash Law’ of 2009, travellers arriving from, and departing to, another EU Member State or a third country and carrying a sum of Euros 10,000 or more - in any currency, in cash (banknotes and bearer negotiable instruments) or gold - must be declared at Customs.

Forms of Payment
Hotels, large shops and restaurants accept credit cards.
Credit Cards
Major credit cards are widely accepted throughout Cyprus, especially in major towns and tourist areas that are used for serving tourists. Visa and MasterCard are the most-accepted types of cards, with American Express, Maestro accepted less frequently.
Visitors in possession of any of the above mentioned international credit cards may contact the appropriate bank for the withdrawal of cash.
Please note that using a credit card overseas often incurs a fee. Some cards marketed to travellers have no fees for overseas purchases, and others reduce the fee from the average 3% charge that most credit cards charge.
For lost credit cards, contact JCC Payment Systems Ltd., and at the same time, contact your bank either in Cyprus or in the issuing country.

Climate
Cyprus enjoys an intense Mediterranean climate, with long dry summers from mid–May to mid–October, and mild winters from December to February, which are separated by short autumn and spring seasons.
Summer is a season of high temperatures with cloudless skies, but the sea breeze creates a pleasant atmosphere in the coastal areas. Isolated thunder showers are possible mainly over the mountains during early afternoons.
Winters are mild with rain and snow on Troodos Mountains (usually starting before Christmas).
The island enjoys abundant sunshine, and even in December and January, there is an average of six hours of bright sunshine per day, whilst over the six ‘summer’ months, there is an average of 11.5 hours of bright sunshine per day.

Temperatures and Weather Conditions
Daily temperatures during the hottest months of July and August range between 30° C on the central plain, and 24° C on the Troodos Mountains. The average maximum temperatures for these two months range between 38° C and 27° C. In January, the coolest month, the indicative daily temperature is 10° C on the central plain, and 3° C on the higher parts of the Troodos Mountains, while the average minimum temperatures are 5° C and 0° C.

Sea Temperatures
The temperature in the open sea hovers above 22° C from June to November, climbing to 27° C in August. Even during the three coolest months of January to March, average sea temperature are an acceptable 16° or 17° C. Near the coast, the temperature of water three or four metres deep is similar to that of the open sea, ranging from 15° to 17°C in February and from 23° to 28° C in August. There are no significant daily fluctuations in sea water temperatures, except in very shallow waters less than one metre deep.

Air Humidity
During the days in winter - and at night throughout the year - humidity ranges from average to slightly low (65% - 95%). During summer it is very low near midday, ranging from 15% to 30% on the central plain. Fog is rare and typically occurs in early morning.

Winds
Winds over the island are relatively variable in direction and strength, depending on the elevation of the land and local temperatures.
