Starting on the seafront, the AIMS accredited marathon has a route like no other, running along the Limassol coastline towards the ancient city of Amathus where, competitors change direction, heading back towards the start line to finish in the city’s centre.
The marathon prides itself on fun participation as well as good race times. Event Director, Spyros Spyrou, explains ‘Limassol is not just a race, it is an experience that champions values such as friendship, solidarity and the power of the human spirit. We work hard to ensure it is as accessible as possible. We could have chosen a more difficult location but we wanted people of all abilities to enter. ‘Limassol is very much a marathon for aspiring athletes. We hope the marathon not only nurtures interest and encourages participation but, also challenges the existing skill-sets of our more experienced runners.
The course’s flat route and unique setting has earned the race growing popularity amongst running cognoscenti and a reputation of being the ‘Aspirational Marathon’. Its record completion time of 2 hours 13 minutes presents a challenge to experienced athletes looking to push themselves towards a personal best however beginners are also well looked after. The marathon requires no previous experience to enter and last year saw more than 100 competitors choose Limassol as their debut marathon, with a further 200 competing in a half marathon for the first time.
Limassol’s famed hospitality sees competitors return every year from over 40 different nations. Thousands of runners enter the annual event, which includes 10k and 5k races in addition to the full and half marathons, ensuring there is always a lot on offer for serious runners and their friends and family making the trip.
Away from the course there are many attractions to enjoy, including cultural tours of the town, trips to the Kykkos Monastery and visits to Curium and Paphos, with their amphitheatres, mosaics and Roman villas.
Entry into the marathon and half marathon costs €50 and €35 respectively making it a better financial option than the Prague Marathon at €95, Milan Marathon at €69 or the New York Marathon at €253.
