DESCRIPTION:Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra \nTIMELESS MASTERPIECES\n \nLefkosia: Monday 4 September 2023\nStrovolos Municipal Theatre\, 20:30\n \nThe Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its Artistic Director\, Yiorgos Kountouris\, inaugurates the new season with two timeless masterpieces by Maurice Ravel and Sergei Rachmaninov\, featuring pianist Elena Mitella at the piano solo. \n \nRachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto has been widely described as the greatest piano concerto ever written. It was composed in 1900 and premiered the following year with Rachmaninov himself as the soloist. It is one of his most emblematic works\, reflecting his deeply idiosyncratic musical personality: unrestrained emotional expression\, nostalgia\, pessimism\, emotionally charged and memorable melodies. Its lyricism inspires popular artists of our time such as Céline Dion. The composition makes massive soloistic demands with regards to speed\, virtuosity and stamina as well as sensitivity to the subtle dynamic and rhythmic shades. Significantly\, the 2nd piano concerto was the first composition that Rachmaninov wrote after a three-year period of artistic stagnation and depression\, and has been dedicated to his psychotherapist Dr. Nikolai Dahl. \n \nThe concert will conclude with Maurice Ravel’s ever popular Boléro\, which will guide us through the art of orchestration used to build up its dramaturgy. Boléro grew out of a ballet project commissioned by Ravel’s friend Ida Rubinstein\, to orchestrate piano pieces from Isaac Albéniz’ Iberia. Ida Rubinstein was a former dancer with Diaghilev’s “Ballets Russes” who had formed her own troupe. When the original commission could not come to fruition\, Ravel had to come up with alternative music material to orchestrate\, as there was no time to compose something new. During his summer holiday in 1928\, he came up with a theme over an ostinato rhythmic pattern\, typical of the Spanish dances Fandango and Boléro and then had the ingeniously simple idea to repeat it over and over\, gradually adding more and more instruments and using different instrumental combinations\, thus leading to an ecstatic climax. The composer also hinted to his pupil and biographer Roland-Manuel that the relentless rhythm was also inspired by his memory of the machines of his father’s factory. The premiere of the ballet Bolérowas given in November 1929 in New York\, conducted by Arturo Toscanini and was received with great enthusiasm and a standing ovation. DESCRIPTION:Your favorite summer will be with you again to celebrate together its 23rd edition in the same place we meet in recent years\, at beautiful Val`s Place\, in the beautiful village of Gialia\, on Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th of August 2023!\nThis year we will present 6+1  shows – 3 each night – including 21 musicians from Cyprus plus two specially invited stars from abroad\, having as a highlight of this year`s event the first performance of Mario Bakuna in Cyprus. He is bringing his music from the ‘Brazilian Landscapes’ promising a magical evening!!\nIn general\, we have once again prepared a rich musical program that we feel very proud to present to you! \n\n	Friday 25th of August\nWe start on Friday at 8.30 p.m. with the first appearance of the Havana Noche at our festival. The well-known Lain Jazz Band is hitting Paradise Jazz Festival`s stage for an unforgettable set\, willing to transmit their energy\, enthusiasm\, and passion for Latin music.The band was formed in Cyprus by percussionist and drummer Constantinos Paouros and participating musicians from Cuba\, Colombia\, and Cyprus. Their music is rooted in Latin jazz genres such as son cubano\, salsa\, timba\, and cha-cha. \nIn Gialia Village\, partners on stage will be Alexander Rodriguez  – on piano\,Mike Michael – on trumpet\, NicolasTryphonos– on acoustic bass\, and Giorgos Koulas – on congas. \nNext on Friday are Allusion Quartet. The band is based on a collaboration between Antreas Yerolatsitis (guitar) and Omiros Miltiadous (drums). After many years of playing together in different band settings\, styles\, and concepts\, the two musicians are now joined by Marios Charalambous on tenor saxophone and Kyriakos Kesta on double bass\, forming a full band quartet. \nThe Allusion quartet is playing primarily their original compositions. Their music is jazz with influences from many genres\, such as pop\, funk\, soul\, blues\, modal and free. As a result\, every performance is an exciting variety of sounds and grooves. Improvisation and spontaneity\, collectiveness\, and interplay are some of the main characteristics of their playing style. \nAnd last Friday’s show is the highlight of our festival. The ‘Brazilian Landscapes‘ is the new project conceived by Mario Bakuna featuring new arrangements of material by great composers such as Marcos Valle\, Claudio Bertrami\, Gilberto Gil\, João Bosco\, and the ‘forrozeiros’ Dominguinhos and Luiz Gonzaga. \nBrazilian Landscapes is a legitimate piece of Brazilian Jazz and a tribute to the culture and memory of the Brazilian people and is the result of years of inspiration Mario drew upon while traveling through Brazil\, experiencing its rhythmic and harmonic richness. From the arid landscape in the northeast that’s brought to the chorus of songs of Forró\, Baião\, and Xaxado\, to the African influence found in Ijexá\, the popularity of Samba and the sophistication of Bossa Nova\, Mario\, and his musicians celebrate the most musically-rich territory on Earth. \nMario Bakuna is on vocals and guitar\, Elias Ioannou on trumpet\, Christos Yerolatsitis on piano\, Rodrigo Cáceres on bass\, and Rodos Panayiotou on drums.\n  \n\n	Saturday 26th of August\nOn Saturday evening\, we will start with Eleonora`s Roussou“Beats’n’Pieces”\, which is a music project of songs from various music genres – as suggested by its name – and was created in 2018\, aiming to explore the diverse depictions of love in different music styles. As time goes by\, the repertoire keeps growing\, and this year’s exploration is in jazz\, pop\, and soul\, including some original songs.\nEleonora Roussou– voice\, flute\, melodica\,Alexis Kasinos– guitar\,Andreas Rodosthenous– bass guitar\, Rodos Panagiotou– drums \nWe will continue within the framework of our academic goals and will grant a little time on stage for young apprentice artists and creators. Last year Dafni Koulas appeared as a surprise\, but this year she will officially present us with two new compositions.\nDafni is 12 years old\, and she started playing piano at the age of 8 with teacher Antonis Polikarpou. Until now\, she had already created more than 10 compositions\, and some of them were used for contemporary dance choreographies by Milena Ugren Koulas.\nFrom September she will attend the music gymnasium in Limassol. \nOn the next show on Saturday\, we will meet “MOCA”an instrumental band formed out of four friends who share a deep passion for jazz music and have studied it extensively in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. They also have had the opportunity to teach and play music together in the vibrant and diverse city of Mumbai\, which has further enriched their musical knowledge and experience. \nWith their finely-tuned skills on various instruments\, this quartet delivers a powerful and dynamic sound that showcases their talents while seamlessly blending to create a harmonious and cohesive performance.\nTheir unique style draws from a range of jazz influences\, and it’s a collective work that contains original music from all the band`s members. Each member brings a distinct flavor to the mix\, and their performances reflect their dedication to their craft and love of music.\nMarios Menelaou is on bass (Cyprus)\, Odysseas Toumazou on guitar (Cyprus)\, Christos Yerolatsitis on piano (Cyprus)\, and Aron Nyiro on drums (Hungary)\, who will visit Cyprus in August to join his friends on stage.\n \nThe last performance of Saturday and our festival is a gypsy jazz group that combines the rich musical traditions of the world with an accent of the French and Balkan region\, with jazz in the first role\, creating a unique and captivating sound. Through this tour\, a new reading of the area emerges with central points of reference being history\, myths and ecology.\n\n			Creating new associations with the place and its stories\, the tour aims to involve the community in the research process and create a network between residents and visitors that will focus on the important role of humans as members of the biotic community of the place .\n\n			Our research team includes the Mayor of Polis Chrysochous Yotis Papachristofis\, Folk Artist Andreas Moditis\, the educator and poet Kyriaki Drakou\, the historian Sofronis Lazarou\, the former museum guard Mr. Andreas Symeonidis and the teacher Mr. Giorgos Georgiou.\n\n			The routes and discussions are based on the map designed as part of the “Akamantis | Head & Hand” and connects the exhibition spaces with the wider area and with places where water sources have been identified.\n\n			 \n\n			Route Curators and Guides:\n			Antigoni Michael (Archaeologist – tour guide\, specialist in Cultural Heritage)\n			Dr. Christina Lambrou (Art Historian)\n			Research\n\n			Research\, Planning and Organization:\n			Margarita Kouali Consultant from the Department of Antiquities\, Konstantinos Perikleous (Terra Cypria: Biologist – Conservation and Wildlife Scientist)\n			Dr. Mairy Athanasiou (Geologist Paleontologist)\n			Kyriaki Costa (Artist / Researcher)\n\n			Supporters: Polis Chrysochous Municipality\, Visit Cyprus\, Vasilikon Winery\, Thanos Hotels\n\n			At the Marion-Arsinoe Museum the artist\, inspired by the archaeological\n			findings\, as well as other objects that testify to the direct association of water with funeral rites and purification ceremonies\, proposes a series of works – contemporary offerings to the healing and restoration of humans’ relationship with the environment. Ancient aqueducts\, brought to light through the exhibition and with the significant contribution of the Department of Antiquities\, bear witness to the actions and interventions of humans in their efforts to make the area habitable. Alex Ioannou’s short film “No Drop to the Sea”\, which is hosted at the exhibition\, acts as a complementary element\, as it explores\, through the voice of Vrahimis Ioannou\, the technical achievements related to the water infrastructure which transformed the peninsula of Akamas and the area of Paphos in the mid-20th century. All the above contribute to the creation of a dialogue which connects the past with the present.\n\n			The works at the Anassa Hotel testify a more intimate preoccupation of Costa with themes such as the flow of time and the space between the real and the imaginary. The artist enters the warehouses of the Anassa Hotel to collect materials that are no longer of any use to the hotel\, such as bedding and various metals\, which she reuses as raw material for her works\, placing them in a new cycle of life. The forms of the sculptural works\, as well as the images that the artist creates\, are on the threshold of representation and abstraction\, transporting us to a world where humans coexist with mythical and unreal forces. Alongside these works\, she opens a dialogue with the community as well as the sculptor A. Moditis\, exhibiting works of his own and giving them a different connotation and materiality.\n\n			Finally\, a specially designed map connects the exhibition spaces with the surrounding area as well as with points where water sources have been traced. DESCRIPTION:The Pasta Event ¨PASTA FLAVORS¨ has been organized during the last years as part of the\n¨Art and Culture Festival¨ of Agios Theodoros Larnakas.\n \nThe Festival lasts three days and includes:\nFirst day: It is dedicated to the Cypriot Tradition\, emphasis is placed on tasting of\ntraditional products.\nSecond day: Concert by popular Greek singers\nThird day: Theater by the “Pentaschino” folklore group of our community.\n \nThe women of the community work voluntarily for the pasta event. They make the traditional pasta: “Makaronia tou Sklinitziou” or “Makaronia tis Smilas” are a type of dried pasta made by mixing durum wheat flour with a little salt and water\, and/or by mixing another type of flour with semolina\, salt and water. Olive oil may also be used in the preparation of the product. Τhe “Makaronia tou Sklinitziou” or “Makaronia tis Smilas” are registration of a name by European Parliament and of the Council on quality schemes for agricultural products and foodstuffs in 2022.\n \nThe event includes:\nHomemade Pasta Demonstration and Tasting: The visitor has the opportunity to make and taste this traditional pasta. DESCRIPTION:July at Rilato Theatre… \n\n	Pancyprian Choral Encounter Ι Epilogi Cultural Movement \n	A Choral Encounter bringing together choirs and young music lovers from every part of Cyprus. Conductors\, choristers\, music teachers and children will have a unique opportunity to attend experiential workshops led by prominent conductors/musicians under the general thematic title: Polyphony and Improvisation through Tradition. DESCRIPTION:July at Rilato Theatre… \n\n	Music for Shepherds and Sultans – Michalis Kouloumis*  \n	Music from Cyprus and classical music of Constantinople / Contemporary Modal Music. \n	Michalis Kouloumis and Tristan Driessens embark on what is just the beginning of a closer partnership\, with Catalan multi-instrumentalist Miriam Encinas joining them on frame drums and pithkiavlin. Their repertoire organically fluctuates from original compositions in classical Ottoman style to anonymous rural dances of Cyprus. With this choice of repertoire and especially with their way of interpreting it\, Michalis Kouloumis\, Tristan Driessens and Miriam Encinas bridge a gap between classical and folk music. Compositions such as Isfahan Saz Semaisi or Köyde Sabah somehow reflect how classical music has always been deeply inspired by folk music legacies.
