DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, the environmental centre is excited to announce another presentation by David Raffe.  David worked for 35 years as a computer engineer before retiring. He has been a keen amateur astronomer for 25 years and is now studying for a degree in astronomy. \nJoin us on October 17th in the media room as David shows us the current night sky as well as what to look up for over the next couple of weeks. This will be followed by Q & A and then outside we will go for star gazing. David will be bringing his 100 mm aperture computerized telescope for us and sharing tips in real time that will help you in the future\, with or without a telescope. You are welcome to bring your own portable telescope or binoculars. To embark on this new journey\, they join forces with two exceptional musicians: CySO’s sub-principal violist Vladimir Tkachenko and the brilliant Cypriot pianist Manolis Neophytou. \nSharing a deep love for Brahms\, their programme starts with his Piano quartet no. 3 in C minor composed in 1875 — a piece with a fascinating connection to the composer’s life. Brahms famously described it with dark emotional imagery\, writing to his publisher: “Imagine a man who is about to shoot himself because nothing else remains to him.” This vivid sentiment reflects the quartet’s turbulent emotional landscape – rooted in Brahms’ deep inner conflict between pain for the mental illness of his friend Robert Schumann and his own love for his wife\, Clara Schumann. \nJust one year later\, in 1876\, the 15 year-old Gustav Mahler\, then student at Vienna Conservatory\, composed his Piano quartet in A minor. DESCRIPTION:The Wine Festival is an event directly related to the human factor. This is a cultural event that people organize immemorial when similar feasts with reference to wine organized. \nThe Wine Festival in Limassol can be seen\, somehow\, as a variant\, like the revival of worship celebrations in honor of Dionysus\, the god of the vine and wine\, like Aphrodite\, goddess of beauty and love\, which were held in antiquity. During these events\, the people worshiped their gods\, but first and foremost cared for his own amusement. \nThe Festival takes place in the Lemesos (Limassol) Municipal Gardens\, which are situated on the east side of the town near the sea. There is an entrance fee which is payable at the gate\, of which there are three. On entry to the Festival through the main entrance\, situated on the south\, you will see a giant statue of a Cypriot village winegrower in his traditional local costume. \nThis has been the emblem of the Wine Festival since the 1961. There are pavilions on both sides of the main entrance belonging to the wineries of Lemesos (Limassol)\, where the visitors can taste\, free of charge\, all kinds of wines. It must be emphasized that all the wines offered to all visitors in unlimited quantities is free of charge with the compliments of the Lemesos (Limassol) Municipality.\nEvery evening thousand visitors come along to the Festival\, to enjoy the happy and jolly atmosphere of people feasting with wine\, delicious local dishes\, at fixed low prices\, local dances and songs and theatrical plays with comedy\, humor and satire. \nOne night in the Limassol’s wine festival is an opportunity for every person to live the Greek tradition of the Dionysiac celebrations\, when all inhabitants of Attica\, citizens or farmers\, sat at common banquets\, offered free by the state\, tasted the new wines and participate in the mass dances\,songs\, poetry and drama. During these celebrations a number of slaves were set free\, whilst those still in slavery were allowed a spell of independence and entertainment. The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the rising Cypriot conductor Andreas Asiikkis promises to spread romanticism\, elegance and magic\, performing popular works and waltzes by Adolf Fredrik Lindblad\, Jean Sibelius and Johann Strauss Jr! \nΤhis year’s concert is part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the accession of Austria\, Sweden and Finland to the European Union\, and it is held in collaboration with the respective Embassies of the three countries. \nThis well-established\, much-awaited musical event is co-organised by the “Friends of Nicosia” Association and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation. Since September 2024\, he is enrolled at the prestigious NMO (National Master in Orchestral Conducting) where he is mentored by Jac van Steen\, Ed Spanjaard\, and Antony Hermus. In The Netherlands he has collaborated with the Ballet Orchestra in a production of Cinderella for families\, and with the Dutch National Opera Academy conducting Rossini at the Bredeweg Festival. \n  \nPreviously\, he studied Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music (UK) and Ionian University (GR). In the UK\, he has conducted new works\, family concerts and has assisted conductors such as Martyn Brabbins\, Sir Andrew Davis\, Juanjo Mena\, John Storgårds\, and Joshua Weilerstein. SUMMARY:4th CAROB FESTIVAL - 30-31.8.2025
DESCRIPTION:The carob\, the fruit of the carob tree (teratcias)\, was the golden berry of the oldest Cypriots. In recent years\, its value in our diet has made it one of the protagonists of the sweet taste of vegetarians and vegans. \nUnder the hot August sun\, the farmers patiently collected the carob fruits. Then they sold them to cooperatives and sent them for export. \nOur little Cyprus held third place in carob production after Spain and Italy. \nThe carob festival\, is a celebration that honors local traditions during the harvest season and Cypriot hospitality. \nWith traditional music\, local delicacies\, crafts and activities for young and old. \nThe opening parade will be the beggining\, throught the streets\, with accompanying of traditional music. \nThere will be food available in the square for the welcome. \nThere will be a reenactment of the harvest of the terrace\, such as the falling of the carob and their collection\, and their weighing in a scale. \nOn both days\, workshops will be held\, where the public can participate. \nThey will make their own 1.
