SUMMARY:24th Pafos Aphrodite Festival – “L'Elisir d'Amore” by Gaetano Donizetti - 4-5.9.2026
DESCRIPTION:On 4 and 5 September 2026\, the Square of the Medieval Castle of Pafos will once again be transformed into one of the Mediterranean’s most spectacular open-air opera venues\, hosting the 24th Pafos Aphrodite Festival. \nThis year’s Festival presents Gaetano Donizetti’s masterpiece L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love)\, one of the world’s most beloved and frequently performed comic operas. Since its premiere in 1832\, the work has captivated audiences worldwide with its perfect blend of humour\, romance and heartfelt emotion\, featuring the celebrated aria “Una furtiva lagrima”\, one of the most famous arias in operatic history. \nThe story follows Nemorino\, a simple yet hopelessly lovestruck young man who believes that a “magic elixir” will help him win the heart of his beloved Adina. Through a series of witty comic twists and touching moments\, the opera reminds us that the greatest magic of all lies not in potions or miracles\, but in sincerity and true love. \nThe Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet “Alexander Spendiaryan”\, in collaboration with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra\, presents a new contemporary staging of Donizetti’s masterpiece\, reimagining the story in a symbolic post-apocalyptic world. This international production brings together distinguished opera soloists\, musicians and creative artists from Armenia and abroad\, promising a performance of the highest artistic standards. \nAgainst the breathtaking backdrop of the Medieval Castle of Pafos and the Mediterranean Sea\, the two performances promise an unforgettable evening where music\, architecture and nature combine to create an experience that has established the Pafos Aphrodite Festival as one of Cyprus’ leading cultural institutions. \nTickets are available through Ticketmaster Cyprus and at all ACS Courier outlets. A limited number of VIP tickets (€150) are also available\, including access to the reception (food and drinks) as well as the Festival’s programme. \nWith fewer than four weeks remaining until the curtain rises\, audiences are encouraged to secure their tickets early and become part of a unique musical experience that attracts visitors from Cyprus and around the world each year. \nInstitutional Sponsor: Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus \nSponsors: Bank of Cyprus\, Allwyn \nSupporters: AGG Luxury Homes\, Petrolina\, Reiwa Development\, Leptos Group \nMedia Sponsors: CyBC\, Phileleftheros\, Phil. Andreou Group\, Channel 6 \nHospitality Sponsor: Kanika Hotels & Resorts \n  \nTickets: ticketmaster.cy | ACS (7777 7040) \nInformation: +357 26932014 / +357 26822359\, cultural.services@pafos.org.cy \n

SUMMARY:Aeschylus’ Seven Against Thebes\, Persona Theatre Company - 5.9.2026
DESCRIPTION:Seven gates\, seven opposing generals\, and at the heart of a besieged city\, two brothers driven towards mutual destruction. In Seven Against Thebes\, Aeschylus places the family feud of Oedipus’ descendants in the maelstrom of war: Polynices returns to Thebes with the Argive army to claim the throne from Eteocles\, while the besieged people of Thebes turn anxiously to the gods. The struggle for power becomes fratricide\, and the cycle of violence returns to where it began: within the family itself. \nIn Lea Maleni’s stage interpretation\, the ancient tragedy provides the impetus for a contemporary reflection on war and the mechanisms that perpetuate it. Revenge breeds new crime\, violence begets violence\, and the need to survive often drives people to the destruction of others and\, ultimately\, to their own destruction. The myth is not treated as a distant past\, but as a pattern that resurfaces throughout history—in civil conflicts\, displacement and the collective traumas they leave in their wake. \nA defining element of the production is its multilingualism. Seven different languages—including Arabic\, Farsi\, Somali\, Hindi and Serbian—are spoken live on stage and form an integral part of the performance. The languages of people and places that have known war\, forced displacement and loss meet on stage\, carrying different memories and experiences. These different voices come together\, bringing Aeschylus’ tragedy into dialogue with the realities of the present. \nThe production was created for the 29th International Ancient Greek Drama Festival 2026 and was funded by the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute and the Deputy Ministry of Culture (Department of Contemporary Culture)\, which also served as co-organisers. \n  \nDuration: 75 minutes \nSupertitles: Greek and English \nAge suitability: 12+ \nTranslation: Yiorgos Blanas \nDirector: Lea Maleni \nDramaturgy: Elena Triantafyllopoulou & Lea Maleni \nMusic Composition: Spyros Kallivokas \nSet and Costume Design: Yiorgos Yiannou \nMovement: Panayiotis Tofi \nLighting Design: Nicos Mylonas \nAssistant Director: Katerina Papageorgiou \n  \nLanguage Coaches: Kamal Eldin Salah (Arabic)\, Almas Aadan Abdulle (Somali)\, Raamaakrisshnan Nenmeli (Hindi)\, Afsaneh Fasihi & Maryam Edalati (Farsi)\, Dragana Constantinou Markov (Serbian) \n  \nCast (in order of appearance) \nEteocles/Chorus: Giannis Karaoulis \nMessenger/Chorus: Andreas Papamichalopoulos \nAntigone/Chorus: Marina Mandri \nIsmene/Chorus: Myrsini Christodoulou \nChorus: Anna Yiangiozi\, Vasilis Michael\, Semeli Kyriazi\, Freideriki Tombazou \nPolyneices: Antonis Akritov \nChildren: Solon Dellaporta\, Damianos Kousiappas \n  \nMusicians on Stage: \nNatasa Hadjiandreou (percussion)\, Annita Skoutella (French horn) \n  \nPromotional photos: Nastazia Christodoulou\, Vasilis Theofanous \nPhotos from the performance: © Pavlos Vrionides

SUMMARY:Musical Portraits: From the Mediterranean to the Balkans - Café Balkan & Theodosii Spassov - 7.9.2026
DESCRIPTION:Café Balkan joins forces with Theodosii Spassov for a musical journey that traces people\, places and memories—from the ports of the Mediterranean to the mountain passes of the Balkans. Melodies poised between tradition and contemporary expression\, rhythms that shift as effortlessly as musicians cross borders\, and sounds that tell stories shared across cultures despite their differences. \nBringing together musicians shaped by diverse cultural traditions\, the ensemble reflects a shared quest for universal values that transcend time and national boundaries\, addressing themes such as exile\, migration and displacement. \nThrough an ongoing creative dialogue\, these outstanding musicians paint a series of musical portraits\, each contributing a distinctive artistic voice. Balancing tradition with contemporary expression\, they seek to forge a personal musical language through original compositions and traditional melodies from the Mediterranean and the Balkan Peninsula. \nEvery piece is a portrait. Every portrait tells a story. Every story becomes a bridge between cultures. \nTheodosii Spassov: kaval \nAlexandros Gagatsis: drums \nGlafkos Kontemeniotis: piano \nIrenaeos Koullouras: double bass
