SUMMARY:Seeing Through Melancholia: Transcultural Melancholias / Hüzün in the Eastern Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:From the work of Romantic writers and artists to Eugène Atget’s photography of Parisian streets\, the melancholic gaze of the artist captured portraits\, landscapes and cityscapes throughout the history of modern art. \n This exhibition introduces modern and contemporary transcultural melancholias in the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition to the international contributions of the renowned Parisian photographers Eugène Atget and Edith Guerin\, Armenian-Turkish photographer Ara Güler and Lithuanian photographer Arūnas Baltėnas\, this exhibition will bring together contemporary artists from Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean to the House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios\, a space of transcultural memories\, encounters and histories. \n Two aspects of the exhibition make it unique in curatorial practices in the context of Cyprus:\n Firstly\, the exhibition brings together artists and poets from the Eastern Mediterranean. This inter-medial approach provides additional opportunities that the single medium of poetry or visual arts working within the strict confines of their medium could not have provided on their own. Additionally\, using the space of the House of Hadjigeorgakis provides an additional dimension of experience through its Ottoman architecture and transcultural memory exchanges to bring to a museum going public a new experience that is usually confined to the gallery space. \n Participating International Artists:\n Eugène Atget (1857-1927) — France\n Arūnas Baltėnas – Lithuania\n Edith Guérin (1910-1998) — France\n Ara Güler (1928-2018)— Τurkey\n Leslie Hakim-Dowek – United Kingdom/Lebanon\n Mustafa Hulusi – United Kingdom/Cyprus \n Artists-Poets Collaborations:\n Etel Adnan\n Alev Adil – Lily Michaelides\n Katerina Attalidou – Niki Marangou (1948-2013)\n Asli Bolayir – Filiz Naldöven (1953-2016)\n Kyriaki Costa – Stephanos Stephanides\n Peter Eramian – Stelios Kallinikou – Haytham el-Wardany\n Lia Lapithi – Daphne Nikita – Elena Fitikidou Alonefti\n Alexandros Pissourios – Lyssandros Pitharas (1960-1992)\n Leontios Toumpouris – Mehmet Yashin\n Natalie Yiaxi \n		 \n Curators: Dr. Alev Adil\, Dr. Gabriel Koureas\n Production: Catherine Louis Nikita \n Venue\n\n Name: The House of Hadjigeorkakis Kornesios\n Telephone No:  +357 22 305 316 \n Website: http://www.culture.gov.cy/dmculture/da/da.nsf/DMLindex_gr/DMLindex_gr?OpenDocument \n Start Date/End Date: 25 October – 19 November 2023 \n Start time/End time:  Tuesday-Friday 8:30-15:30  / Saturday 9:30-16:30 \n Entrance:  Free \n For more information click here\n		 \n\nOrganiser Contact Details \nName: BPRarts\nTelephone: 99 48 66 16\nEmail: Catherinenikita@bprarts.com\nPostal Address: 32 Dimofondos 1075 Nicosia

SUMMARY:Sculptural Storage Format- Talk & Project Showcase by Calin Segal
DESCRIPTION:This talk delves into the intersection of data storage\, perception\, and abstract art. Beginning with exploring how conventional digital formats can influence our understanding of the world\, we delve into the limitations these structures can impose on our conceptual thinking ability.\n	 \n	Venturing beyond digital confines\, we delve into a rich tapestry of historical and cultural data storage methods that have communicated complex ideas intuitively. We explore the concept of ‘sculptural storage devices’ where data is embedded into objects\, sparking imagination rather than straightforward representation. We conclude with a vibrant presentation of various previous projects that capture this concept. \n	Venue/s:\n	CYENS Centre of Excellence\n	Name: Thinker Maker Space\n	Postal address: 23 Dimarchou Lellou Demetriadi Street\, (Formerly Dimarchias Square)\, Nicosia 1016\n	Phone number: 22 747575   \n	Website: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sculptural-storage-formats-talk-project-showcase-by-calin-segal-tickets-658278497707 \n\n	Start date/End date:  13-28 July 2023   \n\n	Start time/End time:  18:00-20:00  \n	Visiting Hours:  9:00 – 16:00 weekdays \n	Entrance Price/Τicket: FREE \n	Event Website and/or Organiser Website\n	https://makerspace.cyens.org.cy/sculptural-storage-formats/ \n	  \n\n	\n	    \n	  \nOrganiser Contact Details \nName: CYENS Centre of Excellence\nTelephone: 22 747569\nEmail: s.taousiani@cyens.org.cy\n Postal Address: 23 Dimarchou Lellou Demetriadi Street\,\n(Formerly Dimarchias Square)\, Nicosia 1016

SUMMARY:Moutoullas revives the art of “skafi” making
DESCRIPTION:“Skafi” is a traditional Cypriot  kitchenware carved out of pine wood which was used for making bread\, and was an essential kitchen item one expected to find in each household throughout Cyprus. To this day\, the only people who specialise in the art of Skafi making reside in Moutoullas alone. This is because the process of carving a skafi requires a number of special skills and those were traditionally passed from generation to generation within the same family. The people specialising in skafi making are called “skafarides” and their livelihood used to depend solely on the making and selling of “skafes”.\n	 \n	The work of Skafi making is a unique and important part of Cypriot Heritage\, and in 2020 it was recognised as such by the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. In an effort to preserve the art of skafi making\, the Community Council of Moutoullas\, in collaboration with the Association of emigrants and friends of Moutoullas\, and Troodos Development Company have organised an event focused on the importance of skafi making in Cypriot culture and history. The event has been kindly sponsored by the Minister of Education\, Sport and Youth\, Mrs Athena Michaelidou who will honor us with her presence on the day.\n	 \n	The event will start at 11am and will last until the late afternoon. It will include an informative talk on the art of Skafi making by Mr Feidias Kountouri\, academic researcher and author of a book based on the history of Moutoullas\, followed by a demonstration of Skafi making by one of the most skilled skafarides (i.e. skafi makers) of our community. Demonstrations of how skafes were used in the older years\, as well as how we can use them today will also be available\, and the participants will have the opportunity to buy their own handmade skafi should they wish to. A photography exhibition will be available in the area dedicated of course on the history of skafi making\, and the event will also include a Cypriot traditional dance show and live music.\n	 \n	Please note that food and drinks will be available in the event on charge. \n	Venue: \n	MOUTOULLAS COMMUNITY COUNCIL\n	Markou Drakou 3\, 2866 NICOSIA\n	Phone number: +357 22952677\n	Fax number: +357 22952290\n	E-mail: k.s.moutoulla@cytanet.com.cy \n\n	\n	Start date/End date: 28 May 2023 \n	Start time/End time:  11:30 –16:00 \n	Entrance Price/Τicket: Free Entrance\n	  \n\n	Event Website and/or Organiser Website:  https://moutoullas.com.cy\n	  \n\n	\n	    \n	  \nOrganiser Contact Details \nName: Troodos Development Company\, Moutoullas Community Council\,\nAssociation of expatriates and friends of Moutoullas \, Association of \nvolunteers and friends of Moutoullas \nTelephone: 22952677 \n Email: k.s.moutoulla@cytanet.com.cy\n Postal Address: Markou Drakou 3\,2866 Moutoullas

SUMMARY:Anna Alexandrou Art Exhibition\, 6-28 May 2023
DESCRIPTION:Anna Alexandrou Art Exhibition\, 6-28 May 2023 \n «A line\, some colour\, a random path. A journey has just begun! A search for the soul\, a world\, an image… Various materials becoming one\, trying to fit\, to write a course\, a line… a life. Through my work\, I try to express my thoughts\, feelings and concerns. For me this is a game of composition\, colour\, material\, emptiness and fullness on a surface. I experiment with different materials\, like fabrics\, paper\, threads\, sewing\, letters\, words\, symbols and anything that helps me to visually compose what I am trying to say.» (Anna Alexandrou\, 2015) \n The exhibition of the visual artist Anna Alexandrou\, which will take place from 6-28 May 2023\, at aigaia art gallery\, aims to reintroduce Anna’s artworks to the public\, as an important contemporary visual artist of Cyprus\, with a selection from all of her works. \n Her work – purely personal – is an illustrated journey of her experiences\, which\, through various symbolisms\, tell her story. Her work is accessible and multi-layered providing both visual satisfaction and a reason for dialogue\, something that the creator herself always sought. \n		  \n\n Venue:\n αιγαια art gallery\n 81 Agion Omologiton\, 1080 Nicosia \n E-mail: info@aigaia.com.cy \n Opening ceremony: Saturday\, May 6\, 2023\, 19:30 \n Start Date/End Date: \n Monday & Thursday: 9:00-13:00 & 17:00 – 20:00\n Tuesday & Wednesday: 9:00-13:00 & 17:00 – 21:00\n Friday: 9:00-15:00\n Saturday – closed\n Sunday 17:00-20:00 \n Entrance: FREE \n For more information please contact  +357 22445757

SUMMARY:Exhibition FIVE
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Antiquities\, Ministry of Transport\, Communications and Works\, announces the opening of the temporary exhibition FIVE.\n\n		 \n\n What was it like living in Cyprus in ancient times? What were the people like\, what did they do for a living\, what did they eat\, did they have hobbies\, did they play games or have time for leisure? FIVE adopts an anthropocentric approach allowing us to come “face to face” with the stories of people from the past.\n		 \n\n The exhibition introduces scientific bioarchaeological information translated into narratives that (re)create moments of the life of: the man from Souskiou\, the diadem child from Dromolaxia-Vyzakia\, the man from Idalion\, the woman from Omodos and the woman from Lefkosia (Antigonou street). Their embodied experiences are presented by means of creative storytelling\, incorporating technology\, sound\, visuals\, archaeological findings and site interpretation in order to make archaeological knowledge more accessible\, urging us to review the ways we think and learn about the past. Α separate space annexed to the main exhibition walks us through the basic principles of bioarchaeology\, the study of ancient human remains and the information that can be acquired from them regarding the lives of ancient individuals.\n		 \n\n The exhibition FIVE is organised by the Department of Antiquities within the framework of the Face to Face: Meet an Ancient Cypriot (FF:MAC) project\, coordinated by The Cyprus Institute and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research and Innovation Foundation (grant no. INTEGRATED/0609/0029). FF:MAC aims to increase the appeal and accessibility of cultural heritage through encounters with real individuals from the Cypriot past\, based on bioarchaeological research.\n\n		 \n\n Venue:\n Cyprus Museum\n Nicosia \n Start Date/End Date: 31 March – 17 September 2023 \n Opening ceremony: 31 March 2023 at 18:30 \n Entrance: FREE\n\n		 \n\n

SUMMARY:«Escape The Ordinary» Contemporary Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Since living in a world where the 9-5pm routine is literally our daily life\, we choose to cope through life with stamina of our consideration. For both the artists\, Lakis Christofidis and Elina Chrysostomou\, art has always been a way of defence mechanism\, a way to go through tough times. A way of escape. This exhibition is the outcome of the many Art Sessions they had since August where the two artists met and used the environment and weather as inspiration\, the people that walked around them\, the sun casting warmth in their hearts.\n	 \n	The artists met while studying in Bristol\, UK. Lakis was studying Fashion Design at the time\, and Elina was studying Illustration. They bonded\, as two long lost friends that found each other in a foreign land\, away from home and family. After a year\, Lakis returned to Cyprus\, and Elina stayed to finish her studies and her Master’s degree\, though their bond was never broken. Their friendship remained solid as a rock.\n	 \n	‘Escape the Ordinary’ is the combination of when people and nature\, in combination with the abstraction of the world\, meet. All in one simple\, yet in an extremely charismatic and creative explosion of inspiring techniques and colour\, of Contemporary Art.Venue:\n\nVenue: \nName:  The Old Vinegar Factory\nPostal address:    Genethliou Mitellla 34\, 3036\, Limassol\, Cyprus\n                                https://goo.gl/maps/mp1iEVAUCshhu1NW9\nPhone number:     +357 99271715\, +357 97811409\n Website: https://www.mitos.org.cy/el/το-παλιο-ξυδαδικο/ \nStart date / End date: 3-4 December 2022 \nStart time/End time:  10:00-22:00 \n\nFree Entrance \n \nOrganiser Contact Details \nName: Iasonas\, Lakis\, Elina\nTelephone: 99271715\, 97811409

DESCRIPTION:The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cyprus\, the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and the Municipality of Paralimni organize the photo exhibition The Life Story of Anne Frank: “Let me be myself” which will be hosted at the Municipal Hall of Paralimni from Saturday 5 November 2022 until Tuesday\, November 15\, 2022.\n	 \n	The opening ceremony will be held by the Mayor of Paralimni\, Mr. Theodoros Pyrillis\, and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands\, Ms. Elke Merks-Schaapveld\, on Friday\, November 4\, 2022 at 7:00 PM at the Paralimni Town Hall.\n	 \n	Dates and hours of operation:\n	Saturday 5 November 2022 – Tuesday 15 November 2022\n	Monday – Friday 08:00-14:30 and Saturday and Sunday 09:00-13:00.\n	 \n	Free Entrance\n	 \n	The exhibition\n	 \n	The educational exhibition Let Me Be Myself – The Life Story of Anne Frank tells the story of Anne Frank and the Holocaust and challenges visitors to consider more general issues such as identity\, prejudice and discrimination.\n	 \n	Historical Content\n	 \n	The historical part of the “Let Me Be Myself” exhibition helps visitors identify with Anne Frank’s personal story. Large-scale photographs depict Anna’s happy early childhood in Frankfurt\, and then the family’s migration to Amsterdam.\n	 \n	In a sequential manner\, the exhibition connects the personal history of the Frank family with the important historical events of the time: the rise of the Nazis\, Germany’s isolation and discrimination against the Jewish population\, culminating in the Holocaust.\n	 \n	Some sections of the exhibition contain images of the house in the center of Amsterdam where the Frank family hid for more than two years. These sections also contain pictures and texts about the outside world of that time: they show the Netherlands under Nazi occupation\, the deportations and the concentration camps.\n	 \n	Anne Frank today\n	 \n	The contemporary section of the exhibition includes stories of young people today. It explores four general themes drawn from the story of Anne Frank:\n\n	• Identity: how do we perceive our own identity? Is it different from how others perceive us?\n	• Individuals as group members: which group do we belong to? How do others describe us?\n	• Discrimination? What happens when others don’t accept us?\n	• Response: What can we do against discrimination?\n	 \nVenue:\nParalimni Town Hall\nPostal address: 6 Antonis Papadopoulos avenue\nPhone number: +357 23819300\nWebsite: www.paralimni.org.cy\nSocial media: https://www.facebook.com/paralimnimunicipality/ \nStart date / End date:  8-15 November 2022 \nStart time/End time:  Monday – Friday 08:00-14:30 and Saturday – Sunday 09:00-13:00 \n\nFree Entrance \n \nOrganiser Contact Details \nTelephone: 23819300\nEmail: info@paralimni.org.cy\nPostal Address: 6 Antonis Papadopoulos Avenue\, 5310 Paralimni

SUMMARY:Stories of Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Stories of Intimacy \nThe Limassol Municipal Arts Center- Apothikes Papadaki\, presents the group exhibition “Stories of Intimacy” curated by its Artistic Director Mariza Bargilly. \nThe inauguration will be held by the Mayor of Limassol Mr. Nicos Nicolaides on Friday\, February 11\, 2022\, at 19.00. \nAccording to the curator’s note\, intimacy is often automatically linked to lovemaking or the sight of a naked body. But is that all? Surely the naked body free from clothes appears more vulnerable and exposed\, both in the eyes of a lover and in the eyes of a spectator who observes a work of art. But a space or a location can also be familiar: a country\, a landscape\, a feeling\, or even a smell. \nWhy do artists over time choose to capture intimacy or lack thereof through their works? It arises as a need to understand their personal boundaries and as an occasion for the beginning of a dialogue between the work and the public\, by raising social and emotional concerns. Revealing aspects of personal life free from beautification and idealization\, especially in times like these where “looks” prevails over “essence”\, is a bold act and requires inner strength. The boundaries between private and public space\, both theoretically and literally\, are no longer clear; the artist removes the limits\, and the private\, the intimate\, ceases to exist as such. \nIn this exhibition\, works are exhibited that “reveal” aspects of the personal history of the artists\, sometimes through symbolism and allegories and sometimes presenting them exactly as they are. \nExhibition Duration:\nFebruary 11 to March 19\, 2022. \nParticipating Artists:\nNikolas Antoniou\, Zohar Barak\, Marianna Constanti\, Renos Efesopoulos\, Tatiana Ferahian\, Despina Fysentzou\, Luis Guzman\, Chiaki Kamikawa\, Boyana Loizou\, Miriam McConnon\, \, Christina Papakyriakou\, Nicoletta Papamichael and Nina Sumarac. \nVenue:\nLimassol Municipal Arts Center – Apothikes Papadaki \nOpening Hours:\nTuesday – Friday 10.00 – 18.00\nSaturday 10.00 – 14.00\nTelephone 25 367700 \nwww.facebook.com / Limassol Municipal Arts Centre – Apothikes Papadaki\nInstagram.com / apothikespapadaki
