SUMMARY:Casts of an Island - 1.6 - 31.10.2024
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition marks a pivotal transformation of an old industrial building in Limassol waterfront into a public space. The Carob Warehouse is one of the most significant modernist structures in Cyprus. It was built in 1960 by local engineer Andreas Papadopoulos and architect Fivos Polidorides and is located between Limassol Marina and the New Port. The PSI Foundation is being created there to secure and renovate this marvel of Cypriot architecture and to propose a strong program to celebrate its conversion into a major cultural venue.\n	The PSI Foundation invited collector and curator Nicos Chr. Pattichis conceived the very first exhibition in its premises. The exhibition deals with Cypriot Contemporary Art and hosts 43 artists with over 120 works from the last 35 years. Several of the artworks\, notably political in nature\, date back to after the checkpoints opened in 2004\, with new additions and creations inspired by the exhibition.\n	The exhibition highlights a tumultuous historical era for Cyprus during the last 50 years and commemorates the tragedy of 1974 when the Turkish invasion was followed by the division of the island. This period was marked by numerous efforts toward healing and societal restructuring amidst significant global upheavals. The artistic expressions evoked by Nicos Chr. Pattichis cover a broad spectrum of proposals that range from varied painting techniques\, constructions\, installations\, and videos\, all representing facets of creative endeavor relating to the unity of universal culture. The artworks featured are curious accumulations of diverse materials\, transformations of archival substances and everyday objects with reimagined aesthetic roles\, along with new mappings between fictive urban planning and psychogeography. This creative polyphony naturally leads to deep reflections on critical issues tied to historical memory and social progress across all sectors of ‘real’ life\, fostering the development of new thinking aimed at building a redemptive worldview. Most of the works are part of the non-profit organization CYCO (Cyprus Contemporary Art Center).\n	The exhibition takes its title from the monumental installation ‘Casts of an Island 2024’ by Socrates Socratous\, that can be described as ‘the casts or more precisely\, the imprints of the island’ of Cyprus. The design and the curator’s theoretical approach create a narrative arc through a sequence of thoughts and ideas\, forming thematic units and dialogues among the works. This method constructs an essay-like approach with clear allusions to both the history and national imagination of Cyprus.\n	Thalea Stefanidou\, Art Historian \n	  \n\n	Venue:\n	PSI FOUNDATION\n	Postal address:  Carob Warehouse\, Tsiflikoudia\, 27 Synergatismo;y Str. \, 3010 Lemesos\n	Phone number: +357 96 503997\n	Event Website and/or Organiser Website:  https://psi.art/\n\n	Start date/End date:   1 June 2024 – End of October/ early November\n\nStart time/End time:  Friday: 5:00pm – 10:00pm / Saturday: 11:00am – 2:00pm & 5:00pm – 10:00pm \nEntrance Price/Τicket:  FREE \nSocial Media Channels of Event and/or of Event Organiser\n(e.g. Facebook\, Instagram etc.):   Instagram :@psi.foundation\nYoutube: psi.foundation \nFor the invitation (pdf) click here

SUMMARY:Anna Achilleos Staeubli "Mesogeios" - 7-29.6.2024
DESCRIPTION:Solo Art Exhibition in Encaustic\, first presented at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in August 2023 and NOW 7th of June 2024 at Marginalia Gallery in Nicosia at 19 :30 until 29 June 2024 and. Opening by his Excellency the Swiss Ambassador Mr Chrisoph Buergener. The theme is the mediterranean sea as is best described in the text below in an ancient greek technique\, Encaustic with beeswax\, damar and pigments on wood with the use of fire. \n	The Sea as a bodily substance in the works of Anna Achilleos-Staeubli \n	ἅλς (A)\, ᾰος[ᾰ]\, ὁ\, dat. plur. ἅλασιν· Lat. SAL\, piece of salt\, in Herod.; generally\,\n	salt\, often in the plur.\, in Homer. etc.; ἁλὸς μεταλλον\, salt mine\, in Herod.\,\n	Homer etc. \n	ἅλς (B)\, ἁλός [ᾰ]\, ἡ sea\, in Homer\n	ἅλσις\, -εως\, ἡ (ἅλλομαι)\, leap\, bounce\, in Arist. \n	Forty paintings created with encaustic technique by the international artist Anna Achilleos-Staeubli especially for the recreation area of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens\, attempt to spell out and give meaning both symbolically and literally to the sea in its Homeric substance: ἅλς with a windy alpha of beginning\, a fluid lambda of continuity\, a serene sigma of saltiness. Sea\, as a shell and living palimpsest with magical content. As a triumphant primordial source of life\, as an eternal nurturer but also as a live crossing of cultures\, a vibrant claimer of borders and a dynamic mean of communication. To understand and sing it as a deep sea and an ocean\, as a magical myrrh and a pelagos\, as a faraway poros and as an nexhaustible pontos\, as chaos and as vibration\, as dizziness and peace. They attempt to measure it mentally\, taking us on a journey through the Mediterranean of the entire Greek civilization\, from the Ionian and the Aegean\, the Propontis and the Black Sea\, to the Myrtle and the Libyan Sea. To capture it as the primordial raw material that permeates and defines so many of the precious\n	exhibits of the National Archaeological Museum. \n	In this original installation by the painter\, the sea expressed as a dotted organic body\, as a rainbow of innumerable shades of blue and as a mysterious shell of creatures and myths\, is presented triumphantly\, without the need for narrative means. Created with a fascinating spectrum of different and unexpected colors and tones that go back to ancient Greek painting\, it is treated as a first-of-its-kind find and creates a mythical plain of successive psychographic instants and eternal oceanic coordinates. Driven by her imperative need to render the majesty of colors\, the rhythm of shape\, the desire of touch\, the ecstatic moisture\, the permanence\, the inexhaustible dept and breadth and the primordial secret undulation\, Anna Achilleos-Staeubli has\n	devoted herself for decades to both inherent difficulties of the technique and the exciting possibilities of encaustic art. \n	Within her yet unexplored seas\, we discover the possibility of a new execution carried out with unerring technique and transcendent artistic quality. Thus illuminating the multiple layers of history\, the expressionist emotion of the fluid and improvised pigment\, the extreme materiality\, the imperceptible shading and the expressive gesture of painting in its finest.\n	Approaching this dominant timeless Greek symbol in a non-narrative and inventive way\, Anna Achilleos-Staeubli creates from the beginning an excellent sparse but densely tangible painting semiology that captivates the viewer from its first sparkle to its very depth. \n	Iris Kritikou\n	Archaeologist & Art Historian Curator of the exhibition \n	ARTIST BIO\n	Has been active painting between Paphos\, Bern and Athens since the year 2000.
