SUMMARY:CYPRIEN KATSARIS MEETS THE CYPRUS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - 30.6.2026
DESCRIPTION:Lefkosia: Tuesday 30 June 2026 – Nicosia Municipal Theatre\, 20:30 \nAt the heart of this brilliant and celebratory concert\, which marks the closing event of the cultural programme of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026\, stands the legendary virtuoso pianist Cyprien Katsaris\, an internationally celebrated artist who holds a distinguished place in international musical life. Joining him is the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra under the direction of its new Artistic Director\, the internationally acclaimed conductor Myron Michailidis. \nAn ideal work to open the concert is Dawn on the Parthenon by Solon Michaelides\, an important figure in Greek and Cypriot musical creation. In this work\, the ideas of light\, serenity\, and the gradual revelation of a landscape are transformed into a richly evocative musical atmosphere. \nThe pianistic artistry of Cyprien Katsaris has earned international recognition not only for its dazzling virtuosity\, but also for its intensely personal artistic identity. He is one of the very few musicians of Cypriot origin to have achieved such international prominence while maintaining such enduring prestige on the world concert stage. \nInternationally celebrated for his authoritative interpretations of Franz Liszt\, Katsaris will captivate audiences with his incomparable brilliance\, poetic sensitivity\, and electrifying virtuosity in the dazzling works of the Hungarian composer: Fantasy on Themes from the Incidental Music “The Ruins of Athens” by Ludwig van Beethoven and the Hungarian Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra. \nIn the Fantasy on Themes from “The Ruins of Athens” by Beethoven\, Franz Liszt transforms thematic material from the famous incidental music into a brilliant work for piano and orchestra\, dominated by imagination\, virtuosity\, and creative musical elaboration. \nAt the same time\, the Hungarian Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra reveals Liszt’s close affinity with rhapsodic writing\, pianistic brilliance\, and the Hungarian musical idiom of the nineteenth century. Closely connected to the world of the Hungarian Rhapsodies\, the work conveys a characteristic blend of formal freedom\, vibrant rhythm\, theatrical contrasts\, and extroverted energy. \nThe second half of the programme presents a feast of famous dances from the symphonic repertoire\, forming a brilliant mosaic of European musical styles and traditions by composers such as Johann Strauss II\, Georges Bizet\, Johannes Brahms and Antonín Dvořák. \nThe world-famous Hungarian Dances by Johannes Brahms combine emotional immediacy\, powerful rhythmic character\, and exceptional compositional mastery\, while the Slavonic Dances by Antonín Dvořák are original compositions inspired by Slavic dance forms. Dances such as the “Navarraise” from the ballet suite Le Cid by Jules Massenet and the “Aragonaise” from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet evoke the brilliance of the French musical tradition. The Viennese creations of Johann Strauss II radiate elegance and festive spirit\, while the Kleftikos Dance by Nikos Skalkottas highlights Greek traditional dance elements through a distinctive and highly personal orchestral language. \nThe programme concludes with the United Nations March by Robert Stolz\, adding a distinctive ceremonial dimension to this festive evening. \nPROGRAMME \nSolon MICHAELIDES: Dawn at the Parthenon \nFranz LISZT: Fantasy on motifs from Beethoven’s Ruins of Athens\, S. 1 \nFranz LISZT: Hungarian Fantasy for piano and orchestra \nMarc Antoine CHARPENTIER: Prelude from Te Deum \nJules MASSENET: Navarraise from ballet suite Le Cid \nGeorges BIZET: Aragonaise from the opera Carmen   \nJohannes BRAHMS: Hungarian Dance no. 5 \nAntonín DVOŘÁK: Slavonic Dance no. 8\, op. 46 \nJohannes BRAHMS: Hungarian Dance no. 4 \nAntonín DVOŘÁK: Slavonic Dance no. 15\, op. 72 \nJohann STRAUSS: Thunder and Lightning Polka\, op. 324 \nJohann STRAUSS: Voices of Spring\, op. 410 \nNikos SKALKOTTAS: Kleftikos from 36 Greek Dances \nRobert STOLZ: United Nations March \n  \nCyprien Katsaris\, piano \nMyron Michailidis\, conductor \n  \nTicket prices: Zone Α: €30 / €25\, Zone Β: €25 / €20 \nConcession tickets are available to: \nStudents\, soldiers\, pensioners\, large and five-member families on presentation of ID. \nFree Entrance for people with disabilities. \nTicket presales: \nOnline at cyso.interticket.com and 1\,5 hrs before the concert.

SUMMARY:Cyprus Sympnony Orchestra - A MAGICAL NIGHT Maria Farantouri sings Mikis Theodorakis - 14-15.5.2026
DESCRIPTION:The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra is greatly honoured and excited to join forces for the first time with the distinguished Greek artist Maria Farantouri in a special tribute to Mikis Theodorakis\, for a truly magical night! The concert also marks the first performance of the Orchestra under the direction of the its new Artistic Director\, the internationally acclaimed conductor Myron Michailidis. \nMaria Farantouri\, the iconic interpreter of Mikis Theodorakis\, will perform with her uniquely profound expressiveness and inner intensity a selection of the composer’s most celebrated songs\, alongside seven songs from the song cycle Odyssey (2007\, poetry by Kostas Kartelias). \n‘Odyssey’ is the final song cycle composed by the great Greek composer. Its creation was sparked by the emotion Mikis Theodorakis experienced\, upon first reading the poetry of Kostas Kartelias in 2006\, at the age of 81: “When I read Kostas Kartelias’s poems\, I suddenly felt a stirring\, as I did when I was younger\,” the composer confides in the album’s presentation. It was only natural that Theodorakis entrusted both the interpretation and recording of these songs to his quintessential interpreter\, Maria Farantouri. “Mikis Theodorakis surprised us with this new\, fresh and romantic work. We are accustomed to his austere expression\, yet lyricism has always glowed beneath the surface of his songs\,” Farantouri herself has remarked about the cycle. \nThe songs of ‘Odyssey’ form a journey into the depths of the modern human soul: love\, loneliness\, and existential impasses\, as each of us\, like a contemporary Odysseus\, inevitably confronts “clashing rocks” in the search for our own “Ithaca.” As Theodorakis eloquently writes: “Here\, the very subject matter points to the exaltation of the ‘individual’\, who\, like Odysseus\, struggles alone—himself and the sea. Thus\, the ‘individual’\, that is\, our very self\, must ultimately come to terms with the idea that Ithaca does not exist\, and must instead cling to his own passions and emotions in order to remain afloat on the foaming sea that is life.” \nThe concert culminates in a selection of the composer’s most emblematic songs. The incomparable melodies of Mikis Theodorakis—so deeply cherished—interweave creatively with the poetry of leading Greek poets\, illuminating the timeless power and universal resonance of his work. The orchestrations\, both of the ‘Odyssey’ cycle and the songs\, are by Antonis Sousamoglou and Lazaros Tsavdaridis. \nThe evening is further enriched by the symphonic ballet suite ‘The Carnival’ (1953)\, a work that vividly reflects Theodorakis’s creative assimilation and transformation of Greek popular music. As the composer writes: “In 1947\, I was in exile on Ikaria\, and it was then that I first came into meaningful contact with our popular (laïkó) music. The first song I heard was ‘Captain Andreas Zeppos’… Immediately afterwards\, I began systematically collecting popular (laïkó) songs.” This song\, along with other Greek popular (laïkó) and folk melodies and dances\, is imaginatively orchestrated by Theodorakis\, “seeking those orchestral colours that respond to the character of the work’s rhythmic and melodic material.” \n  \n‘The Carnival’ was first presented in November 1953 in Athens by the Athens State Orchestra under the direction of Andreas Paridis. It was later staged as a ballet at the Rome Opera in 1954 by the Greek Dance Theatre of Rallou Manou\, with the Rome Opera Orchestra. Subsequent symphonic premieres followed\, in Paris in 1958 and London in 1959. \nThe authentic interpretations of Maria Farantouri\, the dynamic presence of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra\, and the interpretative vision of conductor Myron Michailidis offer a unique musical journey\, illuminating the multifaceted work of Mikis Theodorakis—from the deeply human and intimate creator to the leading Greek composer of global stature. \n  \nPROGRAMME \nMikis THEODORAKIS: \nPopular and emblematic songs \nSeven songs from the cycle ‘Odyssey’ (poetry: Kostas Kartelias) \nOrchestrations: Antonis Sousamoglou\, Lazaros Tsavdaridis \n“The Carnival” – symphonic suite \n  \nMaria Farantouri\, vocalist \nCyprus Symphony Orchestra \nMyron Michailidis\, conductor \nThe concerts are held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026. \n  \nTicket prices: Zone Α: €35 / €30 (concession) and Zone Β: €30 / €25 (concession) \nTicket presales: \nPallas Theatre\, Pafos Gate (Rigainis and Arsinois corner\, 1010 Lefkosia\, 22 410181): \nOnline at cyso.interticket.com and at the theatre box office 1\,5 hrs before the concert.

SUMMARY:Cyprus Symphony Orchestra - Events 1 - RUTTER: REQUIEM -3.4.2026
DESCRIPTION:Lefkosia: Friday 3 April 2026 – Strovolos Municipal Theatre\, 20:30 \nComposed in 1985\, John Rutter’s Requiem is an intimate\, contemplative and lyric meditation on the themes of life and death. Leaving aside any grandiosity and drama\, it is a gorgeous masterpiece that moves towards light rather than darkness. Αs Rutter openly stated\, his approach to the genre was clearly influenced and inspired by Faure’s Requiem. \nIt is precisely because of this approach that Rutter’s Requiem has wide emotional appeal\, one that clearly touches the heart of every listener. To bring out these qualities\, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra is delighted to collaborate with the superb Georgian conductor Levan Jagaev\, the distinguished sopranos Mariza Anastasiades and Eleni Charalambous\, as well as the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra Choir. \nThe seven sections of the work form an arch-like meditation: the first and last movements are prayers to God on behalf of all humanity. The second and sixth are psalms. The third and fifth are personal prayers to Jesus Christ. The Sanctus\, which the composer describes as “celebratory and affirmative\,” is the center and is an affirmation of divine glory\, accompanied by bells as it is in the Roman Mass. \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Exsultate\, jubilate sets the seal on resurrection joy. Its virtuosic vocal brilliance\, buoyant rhythms and luminous melodies beautifully project the radiant text of rejoicing and exultant praise. \n  \nJohn RUTTER: Requiem for solo soprano\, mixed choir and orchestra \nWolfgang Amadeus MOZART: ‘Exsultate\, jubilate’\, K. 165 \n  \nMariza Anastasiades soprano \nEleni Charalambous soprano \nCyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra Choir (choirmaster: Loizos Loizou) \nLevan Jagaev conductor   \n  \nThe concerts are held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026. \n Co-produced by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation and Papadopoulos & Schinis Productions \nTicket prices: Stalls: €25 / 23\, Balcony: €20 / 17 \nTicket presales: \nConcert 3.4: Online at www.ticketmaster.cy and to all shops of ACS Courier\, 77777040 \nInformation: Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation: 22 463144\, www.cyso.org.cy

SUMMARY:Cyprus Symphony Orchestra - TRIBUTE TO VICKY STYLIANOU - 6.3.2026
DESCRIPTION:CYPRUS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA – TRIBUTE TO VICKY STYLIANOU \nPafos: Friday 6 March 2026 – Markideio Municipal Theatre\, 20:30 \nWith this special concert\, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra honours and celebrates the memory of Vicky Stylianou – an artist of remarkable musical contribution\, both as a pianist and as an orchestrator. Having had the honour and joy of numerous collaborations with Vicky\, the Orchestra holds in its heart many beautiful\, vivid memories of her radiance as an artist and her warmth as a person. \nUnder the baton of the Orchestra’s Honourary Conductor Alkis Baltas\, the concert will fittingly open with Maurice Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte\, an elegiac meditation of profound tenderness and lyrical beauty. \nWe are delighted to be joined on stage for the first time by Antonis Manias\, one of the most distinguished Greek violists of his generation\, as the soloist in Weber’s Andante and Rondo Ungarese for viola and orchestra. In this work the viola sings with warm lyricism in the Andante and dazzles with fiery\, Hungarian-inspired rhythms in the exuberant Rondo Ungarese. The acclaimed violist will also perform Alkis Baltas’ Makbule for solo viola and orchestra\, based on the well-known ‘rebetiko’ melody “Makbule” and dedicated to Antonis Manias. \nAlan Hovhaness’s Symphony no. 6\, “Celestial Gate” is a deeply spiritual and luminous work that unfolds as a vast\, transcendent sonic meditation. The symphony blends ancient modal melodies\, shimmering orchestral textures\, and a sense of timeless ritual to evoke a mystical passage between the earthly and the divine. \n  \nPROGRAMME \nMaurice RAVEL: Pavane pour une infante défunte\, M.19 \nCarl Maria von WEBER: Andante and Rondo Ungarese for viola and orchestra \nAlkis BALTAS: “Makbule” for solo viola and orchestra \nAlan HOVHANESS: Symphony no. 6\, op. 173\, ‘Celestial Gate’ \n  \n Antonis Manias viola \nAlkis Baltas conductor \n  \nThe concerts are held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026. \nSupporters: Pafos Municipality \nTicket prices: 15 / 10 (μειωμένο) \nConcession tickets are available to: \nStudents\, soldiers\, pensioners\, large and five-member families on presentation of ID. \nFree Entrance for people with disabilities. \n  \nTicket presales: \nMarkideio Municipal Theatre (Andrea Geroudi 27\, 8010 Pafos\, 26 222286) \nOnline at cyso.interticket.com and 1\,5 hrs before the concert.

SUMMARY:Hambis Municipal Printamking Museum\, Nicosia - 21.1-18.4.2026
DESCRIPTION:The Evolution of Printmaking  in Europe from the 16th Century to the Present Day through Works from the Hambis Printmaking Museum Collection \nThe exhibition includes only the first two printmaking techniques\, Woodcut and Etching. \nOn the occasion of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of Europe\, the Hambis Municipal Printmaking Museum in Nicosia\, presents an important exhibition of prints from its collection. The exhibition offers an overview of the two basic techniques of printmaking\, woodcut and etching  in Europe. The works have been selected based on the variety of periods in which they were created – from the 16th century to the present day – as well as the variety of themes. Emphasis is placed on presenting the different methods of the two techniques. \nThe aim of the exhibition is to highlight the creativity and inventiveness of printmakers in relation to painting. With the aim of highlighting the primary and essential role of Printmaking in the dissemination of images across all social spectrum\, the exhibition presents both independent works and book illustrations\, aimed at a wide audience. It also offers an overview of European artistic movements\, with works by the great names in painting and printmaking. The exhibition\, presents the many exchanges in the art world between European countries. \nA brief history of the two techniques \nPrintmaking appeared in the West World in the early 15th century and contributed significantly to the dissemination of texts and images. Woodcut\, the original form of printmaking\, was based on engraved wooden blocks that could be easily printed along with the typographic elements. In this technique\, only the raised\, unengraved parts of the wood retain the ink and are imprinted on the paper\, a process called Relief. The ability to reproduce works gave artists the opportunity to disseminate their designs to a wider audience. \nFrom the 15th century onwards\, woodcut began to compete with etchings. Engraving on metal plates\, mainly copper\, allowed for greater precision and detail\, as metal is more durable and uniform than wood. In copperplate printmaking\, ink is retained in the engraved lines\, while the smooth areas are cleaned\, a process called intaglio. \nAlthough printmaking made great strides\, it never gained the prestige of painting\, as it struggles to fully render the nuances of light and color. However\, many important artists were also printmakers\, creating original works of high artistic value that brought art closer to the general public. \n  \nΛεζαντες / captions \nJohann GRÜNINGER – Βεργιλίου Αινειάδα Η άλωση της Τροίας (5091 III) \nFrans MASEREEL La ville N° 13-42-72-100 (4918-21) \nΧΑΜΠΗΣ Η φραγκοεκκλησιά (4632) \nAuguste RODIN & Auguste LEPÈRE Buste de Balzac (5254) \nFrancisco José de GOYA y LUCIENTES Nadie nos ha visto(3943)   \nMarc CHAGALL L’âne chargé d’éponges et l’âne chargé de sel (3480) \n  \nCurator – Texts: Helen Reeb \nCollection: Hambis Printmaking Museum \nOPENING HOURS \nWEDNESDAY – SATURDAY \n10:00 – 13:00 / 15:00 – 17:00
