To embark on this new journey\, they join forces with two exceptional musicians: CySO’s sub-principal violist Vladimir Tkachenko and the brilliant Cypriot pianist Manolis Neophytou. \nSharing a deep love for Brahms\, their programme starts with his Piano quartet no. 3 in C minor composed in 1875 — a piece with a fascinating connection to the composer’s life. Brahms famously described it with dark emotional imagery\, writing to his publisher: “Imagine a man who is about to shoot himself because nothing else remains to him.” This vivid sentiment reflects the quartet’s turbulent emotional landscape – rooted in Brahms’ deep inner conflict between pain for the mental illness of his friend Robert Schumann and his own love for his wife\, Clara Schumann. \nJust one year later\, in 1876\, the 15 year-old Gustav Mahler\, then student at Vienna Conservatory\, composed his Piano quartet in A minor. The tale “The Ugly Prince” – written by Galateia Kazantzaki\, first wife of Nicos Kazantzakis – reminds us of this great truth. Conductor and composer Alkis Baltas has lovingly adapted the text and curated the incidental music to the tale which comprises Franz Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony no. 8 and his German Dance in Anton Webern’s arrangement.   \nThe story of Aesop’s well-known fable “The Hare and the Tortoise” is simple and fun. The speedy hare and the slow\, steady tortoise decide to have a race. But who do you think will win? Through this tale\, Aesop (625–560 BC) shows us that it’s not good to be boastful\, and we should never underestimate anyone or make fun of others who may seem weaker. He also reminds us that being strong or fast is not enough to win in life. What really helps us reach our goals is patience and keeping on trying\, no matter what! \nIn between the storytelling\, a selection of beloved songs by Mikis Theodorakis\, Spyridon Xyndas\, Costas Cacoyannis\, Dimitris Maragkopoulos and Alkis Baltas will be heard\, as well as a traditional song from the Dodecanese and two songs by George Hadjipieris from the much-loved song series “The Lazy Dragon.” The orchestration is by Alkis Baltas\, while the story of the fable has been adapted by Vicky Stylianou. Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was a seminal figure of Lithuanian culture. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of this prolific visual artist and composer\, renowned for uniquely blending the two art forms. His tone poem In the Forest evokes a mystical\, dreamlike atmosphere\, combining impressionistic textures with deep lyricism and nationalistic spirit. \n  \nJohannes Brahms’ started composing his Piano concerto no. 1 in D minor at the tender age of 21 overwhelmed by the heartbreaking suicide attempt of his mentor and close friend Robert Schumann\, completing it five years later. It is an awe-inspiring\, intensely emotional work of staggering proportions.
