Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was a seminal figure of Lithuanian culture. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of this prolific visual artist and composer\, renowned for uniquely blending the two art forms. His tone poem In the Forest evokes a mystical\, dreamlike atmosphere\, combining impressionistic textures with deep lyricism and nationalistic spirit. \n  \nJohannes Brahms’ started composing his Piano concerto no. 1 in D minor at the tender age of 21 overwhelmed by the heartbreaking suicide attempt of his mentor and close friend Robert Schumann\, completing it five years later. It is an awe-inspiring\, intensely emotional work of staggering proportions. Through this tale\, Aesop (625–560 BC) shows us that it’s not good to be boastful\, and we should never underestimate anyone or make fun of others who may seem weaker. He also reminds us that being strong or fast is not enough to win in life. What really helps us reach our goals is patience and keeping on trying\, no matter what! \nIn between the storytelling\, a selection of beloved songs by Mikis Theodorakis\, Spyridon Xyndas\, Costas Cacoyannis\, Dimitris Maragkopoulos and Alkis Baltas will be heard\, as well as a traditional song from the Dodecanese and two songs by George Hadjipieris from the much-loved song series “The Lazy Dragon.” The orchestration is by Alkis Baltas\, while the story of the fable has been adapted by Vicky Stylianou. The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the rising Cypriot conductor Andreas Asiikkis promises to spread romanticism\, elegance and magic\, performing popular works and waltzes by Adolf Fredrik Lindblad\, Jean Sibelius and Johann Strauss Jr! \nΤhis year’s concert is part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the accession of Austria\, Sweden and Finland to the European Union\, and it is held in collaboration with the respective Embassies of the three countries. \nThis well-established\, much-awaited musical event is co-organised by the “Friends of Nicosia” Association and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation. The concert will be broadcast live on RIK 2 television channel. \nAndreas Asiikkis conductor \nEntrance free \nIn collaboration with the Embassies of Austria\, Sweden and Finland\, within the 30th anniversary celebration of the accession of their countries to the European Union. \nOrganised by the “Friends of Nicosia” Association & the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation \nANDREAS ASIIKKIS conductor \n  \nAndreas Asiikkis is a Cypriot conductor based in The Netherlands. Since September 2024\, he is enrolled at the prestigious NMO (National Master in Orchestral Conducting) where he is mentored by Jac van Steen\, Ed Spanjaard\, and Antony Hermus. In The Netherlands he has collaborated with the Ballet Orchestra in a production of Cinderella for families\, and with the Dutch National Opera Academy conducting Rossini at the Bredeweg Festival. \n  \nPreviously\, he studied Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music (UK) and Ionian University (GR). In the UK\, he has conducted new works\, family concerts and has assisted conductors such as Martyn Brabbins\, Sir Andrew Davis\, Juanjo Mena\, John Storgårds\, and Joshua Weilerstein. In Greece\, he served as assistant conductor to Alkis Baltas at the Philharmonic Society of Corfu Symphony Orchestra and created a youth orchestra at the Ionian Conservatory focusing on film music. \n  \nHe has conducted orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic\, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra\, Cyprus Symphony Orchestra\, Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra\, and Athens State Orchestra. Words and music intertwine in a seamless harmony of emotions – love\, sorrow\, lamentation\, and faith – mirroring the dramatic passage from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection. DESCRIPTION:A Musical Journey from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection \nWednesday\, April 9 – Holy Cross Catholic Church\, Nicosia \nEaster is a time of deep religious devotion and inner contemplation\, as the Divine Passion is rekindled in our hearts. The journey from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection is reflected not only in sacred rituals and timeless traditions but also through art\, with music holding a central role. Guided by this philosophy\, the Easter Concerts aim to offer audiences a unique musical experience\, filled with emotion and spirituality. \nThe program focuses on the power of the human voice\, as expressed through the great vocal works of the European musical tradition. Words and music intertwine in a seamless harmony of emotions – love\, sorrow\, lamentation\, and faith – mirroring the dramatic passage from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection. The artists have selected a repertoire of universal appeal\, performed in multiple languages – Latin\, English\, Czech\, Italian\, Spanish\, and Greek – featuring hymns\, songs\, arias\, piano works\, and excerpts from renowned requiems and oratorios. \nAt the heart of the program is Ave Maria\, the timeless prayer to the Virgin Mary\, presented through the evocative melodies of Franz Schubert\, Giuseppe Verdi\, and William Gomez. \nThe concerts are organized by Ms. Antonella Mantovani\, Representative of the Latin Catholic Community in the House of Representatives\, under the auspices of H.E. Monsignor Bruno Varriano\, Bishop Patriarchal Vicar of Cyprus\, with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Culture. \nThree distinguished musicians bring the artistic program to life: \nZoe Nicolaidou – Soprano \nAndreas Aroditis -Tenor \nZbynek Maruska – Pianist \n

The Orchestra anticipates with much joy its first collaboration with the world-class oboist Céline Moinet\, who has been praised as “…flawless throughout: her sound is a delight\, her technique impeccable and her stamina…superhuman”. At the podium we welcome back the amazing conductor Patrick Gallois\, renowned for his commanding brilliance and outstanding recordings with NAXOS. \nFrancis Poulenc’s Sinfonietta opens the programme with its playful wit and lyrical grace\, a delightful piece of neoclassical brilliance. Oboist Céline Moinet will enchant us with Jean Françaix’s L’horloge de flore\, a whimsical and evocative musical depiction of flowers blooming through the hours of the day\, brimming with colour and subtlety.
