SUMMARY:Exhibition FIVE
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Antiquities\, Ministry of Transport\, Communications and Works\, announces the opening of the temporary exhibition FIVE.\n\n		 \n\n What was it like living in Cyprus in ancient times? What were the people like\, what did they do for a living\, what did they eat\, did they have hobbies\, did they play games or have time for leisure? FIVE adopts an anthropocentric approach allowing us to come “face to face” with the stories of people from the past.\n		 \n\n The exhibition introduces scientific bioarchaeological information translated into narratives that (re)create moments of the life of: the man from Souskiou\, the diadem child from Dromolaxia-Vyzakia\, the man from Idalion\, the woman from Omodos and the woman from Lefkosia (Antigonou street). Their embodied experiences are presented by means of creative storytelling\, incorporating technology\, sound\, visuals\, archaeological findings and site interpretation in order to make archaeological knowledge more accessible\, urging us to review the ways we think and learn about the past. Α separate space annexed to the main exhibition walks us through the basic principles of bioarchaeology\, the study of ancient human remains and the information that can be acquired from them regarding the lives of ancient individuals.\n		 \n\n The exhibition FIVE is organised by the Department of Antiquities within the framework of the Face to Face: Meet an Ancient Cypriot (FF:MAC) project\, coordinated by The Cyprus Institute and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research and Innovation Foundation (grant no. INTEGRATED/0609/0029). FF:MAC aims to increase the appeal and accessibility of cultural heritage through encounters with real individuals from the Cypriot past\, based on bioarchaeological research.\n\n		 \n\n Venue:\n Cyprus Museum\n Nicosia \n Start Date/End Date: 31 March – 17 September 2023 \n Opening ceremony: 31 March 2023 at 18:30 \n Entrance: FREE\n\n		 \n\n

SUMMARY:Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra-TIMELESS MASTERPIECES
DESCRIPTION:Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra \nTIMELESS MASTERPIECES\n \nLefkosia: Monday 4 September 2023\nStrovolos Municipal Theatre\, 20:30\n \nThe Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its Artistic Director\, Yiorgos Kountouris\, inaugurates the new season with two timeless masterpieces by Maurice Ravel and Sergei Rachmaninov\, featuring pianist Elena Mitella at the piano solo. \n \nRachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto has been widely described as the greatest piano concerto ever written. It was composed in 1900 and premiered the following year with Rachmaninov himself as the soloist. It is one of his most emblematic works\, reflecting his deeply idiosyncratic musical personality: unrestrained emotional expression\, nostalgia\, pessimism\, emotionally charged and memorable melodies. Its lyricism inspires popular artists of our time such as Céline Dion. The composition makes massive soloistic demands with regards to speed\, virtuosity and stamina as well as sensitivity to the subtle dynamic and rhythmic shades. Significantly\, the 2nd piano concerto was the first composition that Rachmaninov wrote after a three-year period of artistic stagnation and depression\, and has been dedicated to his psychotherapist Dr. Nikolai Dahl. \n \nThe concert will conclude with Maurice Ravel’s ever popular Boléro\, which will guide us through the art of orchestration used to build up its dramaturgy. Boléro grew out of a ballet project commissioned by Ravel’s friend Ida Rubinstein\, to orchestrate piano pieces from Isaac Albéniz’ Iberia. Ida Rubinstein was a former dancer with Diaghilev’s “Ballets Russes” who had formed her own troupe. When the original commission could not come to fruition\, Ravel had to come up with alternative music material to orchestrate\, as there was no time to compose something new. During his summer holiday in 1928\, he came up with a theme over an ostinato rhythmic pattern\, typical of the Spanish dances Fandango and Boléro and then had the ingeniously simple idea to repeat it over and over\, gradually adding more and more instruments and using different instrumental combinations\, thus leading to an ecstatic climax. The composer also hinted to his pupil and biographer Roland-Manuel that the relentless rhythm was also inspired by his memory of the machines of his father’s factory. The premiere of the ballet Bolérowas given in November 1929 in New York\, conducted by Arturo Toscanini and was received with great enthusiasm and a standing ovation. The work was recorded on gramophone twice in 1930\, which has significantly contributed to its popularity. \n \nPROGRAMME\nSergei Rachmaninov: Piano concerto no. 2 in C minor\, op.18\nMaurice Ravel:            Boléro\n \nElena Mitella piano\nYiorgos Kountouris Artistic Director and Conductor \n \nTicket prices:  €12 / €7 (concession)\n \nConcession tickets are available to:\nStudents\, soldiers\, pensioners\, large and five-member families on presentation of ID.\nFree entrance for people with disabilities. \n \nTicket presales: \n\n\n Online at cyso.interticket.com\n\n Αt the Pallas Theatre Box Office every Wednesday 16:00-19:00\n\n 2 hrs before the concert\n\n \nInformation: 22 463144\, www.cyso.org.cy\n \n \n \n \n \n
