After Schumann heard 17-year-old Chopin’s Variations on ‘Là ci darem la mano’ for piano and orchestra\, he exclaimed: ‘Hats off\, gentlemen\, a genius!’ The piece is a dazzling showcase of lyrical beauty and technical prowess.
