Lemesos 2030 and the Andreas Pittas Art Characterization Laboratories (APAC Labs) of the Cyprus Institute present the exhibition “Unseen Gaze – The Hidden Portrait under Titian’s ECCE HOMO”, to be inaugurated by the Mayor of Limassol, Mr Yiannis Armeftis, on 24 January 2025, at 18:30, at Apothikes Papadaki.
The exhibition unveils a hidden work by Titian, concealed beneath the famous painting Ecce Homo (1570). This discovery was made possible through advanced technology and scientific methods pioneered by the Andreas Pittas Art Characterization Laboratories (APAC Labs). The hidden artwork, the portrait of a man, was revealed using cutting-edge technology, whereas the results of this process were utilised by visual artist and rector of the Athens School of Fine Arts, Erato Hadjisavva, to recreate the painting. This groundbreaking method highlighted the intrinsic connection between art and science, paving the way for new artistic approaches.
Cultural heritage, science, technology, and contemporary artistic practices converge in the Unseen Gaze exhibition: a rare opportunity for visitors to delve into the technical analysis of the painting, understand the relationship between the original work and its modern recreation (1570 & 2024), as well as to witness how technology can unveil artistic secrets hidden for centuries.
