Cyprus is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean and one of the leading year-round destinations in the Mediterranean. Renowned for its warm climate, Blue Flag beaches, rich cultural heritage, and genuine hospitality, the island offers a diverse travel experience, from vibrant seaside resorts and cosmopolitan cities to traditional villages, nature trails, and UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The Republic of Cyprus has several major urban centres, each with its own character.
Lefkosia (Nicosia) is a vibrant capital where centuries of history, a rich cultural scene, and contemporary city life meet within the last divided capital of Europe. Lemesos (Limassol) is a lively coαstal city known for its promenade, wine villages, gastronomy, and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Larnaka (Larnaca) combines a relaxed and distinctive ambience with a harmonious blend of nature, heritage sites, and seaside life. Pafos (Paphos) is a timeless destination where UNESCO-listed archaeological treasures, unspoiled natural landscapes, rich mythology, and Mediterranean lifestyle come together. The Ammochostos District (Famagusta) includes some of the island’s most popular beach resort areas, such as Ayia Napa and Protaras, renowned for their golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
The island’s mountainous interior, dominated by the Troodos range, offers idyllic traditional villages that provide an authentic taste of local life, Byzantine churches listed as World Heritage Sites, and nature experiences, providing a striking contrast to the coast with its lush forests and breathtaking geological formations.
The Status of the Island
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 as a result of the Turkish military invasion and occupation. Today, the internationally recognised state, main cities, airports, and tourist infrastructure are located in the government-controlled areas of the island, where the Government of the Republic of Cyprus exercises effective control. The areas not under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus are separated from the government-controlled areas by a United Nations-controlled buffer zone.
Visitors can travel freely and safely throughout the government-controlled areas, which offer modern infrastructure, high standards of services, and a secure European environment for tourism.
Crossings between the government-controlled areas and the areas not under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus are possible at designated crossing points, subject to the regulations in force at the time of travel. Visitors intending to cross are advised to consult official guidance beforehand.
The Republic of Cyprus remains committed to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue under the auspices of the United Nations.
