From ancient wine and potent spirits, to strong coffee and refreshing concoctions, there is a traditional Cypriot drink to be had for every occasion! After all, the island’s flavoursome cuisine would not be complete without one, and they are all accompanied by an interesting back-story or a historical significance that embeds them firmly in the island’s culture. The island’s longstanding winemaking tradition dates back over 4,000 years and can lay claim to the world’s oldest wine still in production - the sweet dessert wine of Commandaria - whilst the glut of grapes are also put to good use to make the potent ‘firewater’ spirit of Zivania. In traditional coffee shops across the island, Cypriot coffee is brewed with skill and served in tiny demitasse cups due to its strength, whilst today’s cold Frappe (iced coffee) is enjoyed in more modern hangouts.
The drinks of the island are also seasonal; in the heat of the summer, a refreshing yogurt Airani is just the thing for quenching your thirst, whilst in the colder winter months, a warming almond Soumada is a comforting and delicious tonic.
So, whether you are relaxing, exploring or dining, the island’s traditional drinks can all be part of the experience. And to extend the memory of your visit, why not pick up a souvenir - such as of a packet of Cypriot coffee, a bottle of wine or Zivania, or the ingredients for a Cyprus Brandy Sour - and enjoy the drinks of the island all over again… back home!
